After struggling in that role, the Dodgers converted him to a reliever, where he was the most outstanding closer in the league from 2002 to 2004, winning the Cy Young Award in 2003. After the Dodgers did not re-sign him in 2006, Gagné began the 2007 season with the Texas Rangers and recorded a few successful saves in the closer role. After struggling during his time with the Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers, he was let go following the 2008 season. Eric Gagne was associated with the baseball steroids scandal in 2007 when he appeared in the Mitchell Report, shortly after agreeing to a 2008 contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Gagné then pitched in the minor leagues but missed the entire 1997 season due to Tommy John surgery.
