Edgar Martinez Biography

Edgar Martinez, born on January 2, 1963, serves as the senior director of hitting strategy coach for the Seattle Mariners in Major League Baseball. He played in MLB as a designated hitter and third baseman for the Seattle Mariners from 1987 to 2004. Martínez served as the Mariners' hitting coach from 2015 to 2018 and returned to the role in August 2024. He made his major league debut in 1987 but did not become a full-time player until 1990 at age 27. In the 1995 American League Division Series, he hit a game-winning double that helped the Mariners advance and boosted public interest in the team's efforts to build a new stadium. Martínez was a seven-time MLB All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and two-time batting champion. He was inspired to play baseball after watching fellow Puerto Rican Roberto Clemente play in the 1971 World Series.
