Eddie Giacomin Biography

Edward Giacomin was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played for the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings of the NHL between 1965 and 1978. Giacomin began his professional career in 1959 when he played four games for the Washington Presidents of the Eastern Hockey League. Despite suffering serious burns in a kitchen accident, Giacomin made the roster of the Providence Reds in the 1960–61 season. Giacomin served as the Rangers' primary goaltender for nine consecutive seasons after establishing himself as a stand-up style player with strong puck-handling abilities. During the Stanley Cup playoffs semi-finals against the Chicago Black Hawks, Eddie Giacomin played through injury after Bobby Hull skated over his hand, contributing to the Rangers' victory. Eddie Giacomin made a lunging cross-crease save on Frank Mahovlich during the final moments of Game 6 in the 3-2 victory. Eddie Giacomin collaborated with journalist Hugh Delano on a book published in 1976 that detailed his life and professional hockey career.
