Edward Vernell Howard IV, born on January 28, 2002, is an American professional baseball shortstop in the Chicago Cubs organization. Howard was chosen 16th overall in the 2020 Major League Baseball draft by the Chicago Cubs. After his junior year, Howard competed in the Under Armour All-American Game, the Perfect Game All-America Game, and the inaugural MLB High School All-Star Game. As a high school sophomore, Howard committed to play college baseball at the University of Oklahoma and later signed with the Sooners during his senior year. Howard began his professional career in 2021 with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Low-A East. He started the 2022 season with the South Bend Cubs in the High-A Midwest League. In 112 combined appearances across two affiliates, Howard posted a .225 batting average, .281 on-base percentage, .298 slugging percentage, with 27 RBI and eight stolen bases.
