Earl Weaver Biography

Earl Sidney Weaver was born on August 14, 1930, and passed away on January 19, 2013, serving as an American professional baseball manager, author, and television color commentator. Weaver played in minor league baseball as a second baseman from 1948 to 1960, beginning his career in the minors before moving into management. In 1956, he began his managerial career as a player–manager, leading teams for five seasons before ceasing to play to focus solely on managing. Weaver managed the Baltimore Orioles in 1968–1982 and 1985–86, winning the World Series in 1970. Weaver grew up in a crowded section of St. Louis near Sportsman's Park, where he was raised in a neighborhood described by Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer as being on the bad side of a street. Weaver's Orioles became the next club to surpass 100 victories in three consecutive seasons, beginning in 1969. In his teens, Weaver was a three-sport athlete at Beaumont High School in St. Louis, contributing to its state championship basketball team and serving as a co-captain of its football team.
