Don Shula Biography

Donald Francis Shula, born January 4, 1930, served as an NFL head coach from 1963 to 1995, leading teams through decades of professional football. He holds the record for most NFL wins with 347, including 328 regular season victories, marking him as the league’s winningest head coach. In 1972, Shula led the Miami Dolphins to a perfect season, securing their only Super Bowl title in NFL history. He is the only head coach to appear in six Super Bowls, with five with the Dolphins and one with the Colts. Shula uniquely guided two different franchises to their first Super Bowl appearances, including Baltimore and Miami. Shula began playing football at Harvey High School in Painesville, Ohio, starting in 1945, where he developed his athletic foundation. As he prepared to graduate in 1947, many returning veterans competed for college scholarships, shaping his path into professional football.
