Donald Arthur Mattingly was born on April 20, 1961, and is known by the nicknames Donnie Baseball and the Hit Man. He played his entire MLB career with the New York Yankees from 1982 to 1995. Back problems limited his 1990 season, but after becoming team captain in 1991, he led the Yankees in multiple offensive categories during 1992. In his final season, 1995, he batted .417 in the postseason with a home run and four doubles. Mattingly won nine Gold Glove Awards and retired with a career fielding percentage of .996. He retired with a .307 batting average, having hit over .300 seven times and accumulated 5,000 at bats since 1960. After serving as a coach with the Yankees starting in 2004, he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008 and managed them for five seasons.
