Derrick Martell Rose was born on October 4, 1988, and is an American former professional basketball player. Derrick Rose played college basketball for the Memphis Tigers for one season before being selected first overall in the 2008 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. Derrick Rose, known as D-Rose, earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 2009 and received the MVP award in 2011 at 22 years and 7 months. Rose was born and raised in Chicago and attended Simeon Career Academy. Derrick Rose guided the Tigers to a 38–2 record, their first No. 1 ranking in 25 years, and a berth in the NCAA championship game. In 2009, an NCAA investigation revealed that Rose's SAT scores had been invalidated, resulting in the vacating of Memphis' entire 2007–08 season. Derrick Rose did not play on the varsity team as a freshman because head coach Bob Hambric, who had served since 1980, followed a policy excluding freshmen.
