Derian John Hatcher, born on June 4, 1972, played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League as a defenseman for the Minnesota North Stars, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, and Philadelphia Flyers. Derian Hatcher holds ownership of the Sarnia Sting in the Ontario Hockey League. In 2014, Hatcher and David Legwand purchased the Sarnia Sting, with Hatcher serving as head coach from 2015 to 2020. As a youth, Hatcher competed in the 1985 and 1986 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with the Detroit Compuware minor ice hockey team. He spent ten years with the Dallas Stars, recording 71 goals, 223 assists, and 1,380 penalty minutes, and served as team captain during their 1999 Stanley Cup victory. In 2004, Hatcher played minor league hockey with the Motor City Mechanics in Fraser, Michigan, during the NHL season cancellation. On January 29, 2006, Hatcher was named interim captain of the Philadelphia Flyers.
