Dave Winfield Biography

David Mark Winfield, born October 3, 1951, is an American former Major League Baseball right fielder. Dave Winfield holds the position of special assistant to the executive director within the Major League Baseball Players Association. Dave Winfield earned seven Gold Glove Awards, six Silver Slugger Awards, and was named to 12 All-Star teams during his Major League Baseball career. The San Diego Padres retired his No. 31 in recognition of his contributions to the team. He earned a full baseball scholarship to the University of Minnesota in 1969, where he played both baseball and basketball. His 1971–72 Minnesota team captured a Big Ten Conference basketball championship, the school's first outright title in 53 years. Winfield also played college summer baseball for the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks, earning MVP honors in 1972.
