Dave Concepcion Biography

Dave Concepcion, born on June 17, 1948, is a former professional baseball player and manager from Venezuela. He played his entire Major League Baseball career as a shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds, a team that won four National League pennants and two World Series championships between 1970 and 1976. A nine-time All-Star, Concepción earned five Gold Glove Awards while playing alongside Joe Morgan as part of one of the era's top middle-infield combinations. He also won two Silver Slugger Awards and was named the MVP of the 1982 All-Star Game. Dave Concepción had his uniform number 13 retired by the Cincinnati Reds in 2007, following his induction into the team's Hall of Fame in 2000. His coach, Wilfredo Calviño, who was also a Cincinnati Reds scout, signed Concepción to a Reds contract in 1967. In 1971, he was the only Reds player to reach base safely during a no-hit performance by Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Rick Wise, drawing a sixth-inning walk that ended the perfect game attempt.
