Darryl Eugene Strawberry Sr. was born on March 12, 1962, and has played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball as a right fielder. Standing 6 ft 6 in with a 1.98 m frame, Strawberry was known for his powerful swing and home run production during his MLB career. He was selected to the All-Star Game from 1984 through 1991, earning eight consecutive appearances. At age 18, Strawberry signed a letter of intent to play college baseball at Oklahoma State under coach Gary Ward. Shortly after, he was chosen first overall in the amateur draft and signed with the New York Mets in July 1980. His older brother Michael also played professional baseball, following a similar athletic path. Strawberry made his major league debut in 1983, recording 26 home runs, 74 RBIs, 7 triples, and a .257 batting average.
