Daniel Francis Fouts, born on June 10, 1951, played quarterback for the San Diego Chargers across 15 seasons in the National Football League from 1973 to 1987. After an initial period of limited recognition, Fouts emerged as a central figure in the Chargers' offensive transformation during the Air Coryell era. He achieved the league passing yardage lead each year from 1979 to 1982, including three seasons exceeding 4,000 passing yards, a feat unmatched at the time. Fouts earned six Pro Bowl selections, was named first-team All-Pro on two occasions, and received the 1982 Offensive Player of the Year honor. He played college football at the University of Oregon, where he established multiple records, and was later honored with inductions into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Oregon Hall of Fame. Fouts was selected by the Chargers in the third round of the 1973 NFL Draft. The arrival of head coach Don Coryell in 1978 introduced the Air Coryell offensive system, which emphasized frequent passing and enabled Fouts to maximize his throwing output.
