Chris Hanburger Biography

Christian G. Hanburger Jr. played as a linebacker in the National Football League and has competed in professional American football. He spent his entire 14-year career with the Washington Redskins, from 1965 to 1978, and was later honored with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After completing military service, he received a scholarship to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he played college football for the Tar Heels under coach Jim Hickey. From 1962 to 1964, he served as a center and helped block for running back Ken Willard, who accumulated nearly 2,000 rushing yards during those seasons. George Allen became head coach in 1971 and led the team during Hanburger's tenure through 1977. Following the retirement of head coach Pardee after the 1972 season, Hanburger assumed leadership as quarterback of Washington's defense. In 1972, he was recognized as the NFC Defensive Player of the Year by the Kansas City Committee of 101.
