Carmen Basilio, born Carmine Basilio on April 2, 1927, was an American professional boxer who held the undisputed welterweight and middleweight titles. He employed a blend of technical skill and aggressive tactics, often engaging opponents in close-range combat during fights. In 1957, he was honored as Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine and received the Hickok Belt, awarded to the top professional athlete of that year. After completing his military service and returning home, he launched his professional boxing career. His professional debut occurred on November 24, 1948, in Binghamton, New York, against Jimmy Evans. During a 24-fight stretch, he defeated former world champion Lew Jenkins in a 10-round decision in 1950. In 1956, he lost the middleweight title in Chicago to Johnny Saxton via a 15-round decision.
