Carl Yastrzemski, born August 22, 1939, played his entire 23-year professional baseball career with the Boston Red Sox in Major League Baseball. He began his career primarily in left field and also appeared in 33 games at third base. Yastrzemski earned 18 All-Star selections, won seven Gold Glove Awards, and is a member of the 3,000-hit club with over 400 home runs in the American League. In 1967, he led the Red Sox to the American League pennant and was awarded the American League Most Valuable Player honor. That same year, he captured the Triple Crown by leading the league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in. He maintained a career batting average of .512 and once pitched a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts in a 1957 high school championship game. After signing with the Red Sox, he played for the minor-league Raleigh Capitals in 1959, where he hit .377 and won both the Carolina League Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards.
