Carl Lewis Biography

Frederick Carlton Lewis, born on July 1, 1961, is an American former track and field athlete who earned nine Olympic gold medals and one silver, along with ten World Championships medals, including eight gold. His athletic career spanned from 1979 to 1996, during which he excelled in sprinting and long jumping events. He established world records in the 100 meters, 4 × 100 meters relay, and 4 × 200 meters relay, and his indoor long jump record has remained unbroken since 1984. Lewis operates a marketing and branding company named C.L.E.G., which focuses on promoting products and services, including his personal brand. He collaborated with Tellez to refine his technique, enabling him to jump without discomfort and achieve the NCAA title in 1980 with a wind-assisted leap of 8.35 meters. He earned qualification for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team in the long jump and as part of the 4 × 100 meters relay squad. In 1982, he demonstrated continued excellence, and for the first time since 1968, a competitor appeared poised to surpass Bob Beamon’s long jump world record of 8.90 meters.
