Bruce Smith Biography

Bruce Smith was born on June 18, 1963, and played American football as a defensive end in the NFL for 19 seasons, primarily with the Buffalo Bills. He played college football for the Virginia Tech Hokies and won the Outland Trophy in 1984. Smith was selected by the Buffalo Bills first overall in the 1985 NFL draft. He is the NFL's all-time career leader in quarterback sacks with 200. Known as the Sack Man during his time at Virginia Tech, he finished his college career in 1984 as the most honored player in Hokie history. During his junior season in 1983, he recorded 22 sacks, contributing to a total of 46 in his college career. In 1984, he earned the Outland Trophy and was named to the All-America Team, marking the end of his collegiate career.
