Bobby Bowden Biography

Robert Cleckler Bowden, born on November 8, 1929, was an American college football coach who led teams at multiple institutions throughout his career. He served as head coach for the Florida State Seminoles at Florida State University from 1976 until 2009, achieving widespread recognition for his tenure with the program. His Seminoles ranked in the AP top-5 for 14 straight seasons, a record unmatched by any other program in college football history. After a challenging 2009 season, Bowden retired shortly after turning 80, marking the end of a long tenure that had seen both sustained success and later decline. During his final years, he competed with Joe Paterno in a notable pursuit to become the winningest coach in NCAA Division I college football history. Florida State University's internal review concluded that 12 of his wins must be vacated, resulting in a final career record of 377–129–4, placing him second behind Paterno's total. Bowden began his football journey as a quarterback at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, later receiving a scholarship to play at the University of Alabama.
