Bobby Allison Biography

Robert Arthur Allison, born on December 3, 1937, was an American professional stock car racing driver and owner who passed away on November 9, 2024. He founded the Alabama Gang, a group of drivers based in Hueytown, Alabama, known for competing on short tracks with high purses. Allison competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 1961 to 1988, regularly participating in short track events throughout his career. He was named one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers, earned a place in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and won the 1983 Winston Cup championship, along with Daytona 500 victories in 1978, 1982, and 1988. Allison achieved success competing with his own low-budget team for much of his career. He accumulated 85 credited victories and one uncredited victory, placing him fourth all-time in career wins. On June 19, 1988, during the midpoint of the 1988 season, he crashed on the first lap of the Miller High Life 500.
