Bo Schembechler Biography

Glenn Edward 'Bo' Schembechler Jr. was an American college football player, coach, and athletics administrator who lived from April 1, 1929, to November 17, 2006. He served as head football coach at Miami University from 1963 to 1968 and at the University of Michigan from 1969 to 1989, achieving a career record of 234 wins, 65 losses, and 8 ties. During his 21 seasons as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, his teams recorded a record of 194–48–5 and won or shared 13 Big Ten Conference titles. He played college football as a tackle at Miami University, where he was coached by Woody Hayes in 1949 and 1950, later serving as an assistant coach at Ohio State University in 1952 and from 1958 to 1962. In the Michigan–Ohio State football rivalry, known as the 'Ten-Year War,' both coaches' teams won or shared the Big Ten Conference title every season and typically ranked in the national standings. After leaving the University of Michigan in 1990, he became president of Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers, a role he held until 1992. Following a period of service in the U.S. Army, he worked as an assistant at Presbyterian College in 1954 and then served as freshman coach at Bowling Green for one year.
