Billy Donovan Biography

William John Donovan Jr., born on May 30, 1965, is an American basketball coach who has served as a lead assistant for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. He was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025 as a coach. Following his college career, Donovan played in the Continental Basketball Association and briefly with the New York Knicks during the 1987–88 and 1988–89 seasons. After concluding his playing career in 1989, he worked as a stock broker before joining Rick Pitino’s staff at the University of Kentucky. In 1994, he began his head coaching tenure at Marshall University, guiding the Thundering Herd to a 35–20 record across two seasons. After two seasons with losing records, he rebuilt the roster through national recruiting, leading the Florida Gators to sixteen consecutive 20-win seasons and two NCAA championships. After 19 years at Florida, he transitioned to the NBA by accepting a coaching role with the Oklahoma City Thunder in April 2015.
