Billy Beane Biography

William Lamar Beane III, born on March 29, 1962, is an American former professional baseball player and current front office executive. He has served as senior advisor to owner John Fisher and minority owner of the Athletics in Major League Baseball, previously holding the role of executive vice president of baseball operations. Selected by the Mets in the MLB draft, Beane did not fulfill the high expectations set by scouts who had projected him as a star. In his executive role, Beane has used statistical analysis, known as sabermetrics, to assess player value and team performance. His high school coach included him on the varsity baseball team for the final game of his freshman year. The New York Mets, who held the first overall selection in the 1980 MLB draft, recognized Beane's talent and considered selecting him with the top pick. After touring the Mets clubhouse, Beane chose to sign with the team, accepting a US$125,000 signing bonus.
