William Malcolm Dickey, born on June 6, 1907, was an American professional baseball catcher and manager who played in Major League Baseball. He spent 17 seasons as a player with the New York Yankees, establishing himself as a key figure in the team's history. Dickey served as a player-manager for the Yankees during the 1946 season, which was also his final year as a player. After retiring from playing, he returned to the Yankees organization in 1949 as a coach, where he worked with Yogi Berra to refine his catching skills. During his tenure with the Yankees, the team appeared in the World Series nine times and won eight titles. His father, John Dickey, had played baseball for a semi-professional team in Memphis, Tennessee. Dickey began his professional career at age 18 with the Little Rock Travelers in the Class A Southern Association in 1925.
