Bernie Parent Biography

Bernie Parent won the Dave Pinkney Trophy twice for the lowest goals-against average during his junior hockey career, concluding with a championship victory in the Ontario Hockey Association and the Memorial Cup in 1965. He split the following season between Boston and the Bruins' minor league affiliate in Oklahoma, gaining experience across levels of professional hockey. Parent started the 1973–74 season with two shutouts, defeating Toronto 2–0 in the opening game at Philadelphia. During the 1977–1978 season, he posted a 2.22 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage, and led the league with 7 shutouts in 49 games. The incident involving a puck striking his face, along with Gerry Desjardins' injury in 1977, prompted many NHL goalies to switch from fibreglass masks to the helmet and cage design. In 1998, he was ranked number 63 on The Hockey News' list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players. He was named to the WHA Second All-Star Team in 1973, recognizing his performance during that season.
