Arthur Ashe Biography

Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. was an American professional tennis player born on July 10, 1943, and died on February 6, 1993. He won three Grand Slam singles titles and two doubles titles during his career. Ashe was the first Black player selected for the United States Davis Cup team and the only Black man to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open. In 1975, he was ranked world No. 1 by several major tennis publications and rankings. That same year, he received the 'Martini and Rossi' Award and was named ATP Player of the Year. The Arthur Ashe Stadium, the main venue for the US Open, is named in his honor and is the largest tennis arena in the world. In 1958, he became the first African-American to compete in the Maryland boys' championships.
