Charles Andrew Russell, known as Andy Russell, was an American professional football player who played his entire 12-year career as a linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League. As a senior in college, Russell earned All-American recognition from The Sporting News and was selected to the first team all-state roster. During his three-year college tenure from 1960 to 1962, Russell led his team in rushing during 1961 and in interceptions during 1962, with only four losses recorded across those seasons. After joining the Steelers in 1963, Russell paused his NFL career to serve in the Army, fulfilling prior Reserve Officers' Training Corps obligations while stationed in Germany. He returned to the Steelers and played for eleven additional seasons, earning an M.B.A. in economics and finance from the University of Missouri in 1967, later founding a company focused on investment vehicle syndicates. When Chuck Noll became head coach of the Steelers in 1969, Russell was among the few players retained, a testament to his standing within the team. Russell was a foundational member of the Steelers’ Steel Curtain defense and was honored as the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1971.
