Al Kaline Biography

Albert William Kaline, nicknamed "Mr. Tiger," played his entire 22-season career in Major League Baseball for the Detroit Tigers. Kaline primarily played in the outfield, most notably as a right fielder, and was recognized for his strong throwing arm. He was selected to 18 All-Star Games, including annual appearances from 1955 through 1967. In later years, he transitioned to first base and served as the designated hitter during his final season. Kaline retired shortly after achieving the 3,000-hit milestone during the 1974 season. When he first joined the team, he was assigned to the outfield after no pitching spots were available. He began his career wearing number 25 but requested and received number 6 from teammate Pat Mullin after the 1953 season ended.
